LIBRARY'S FAMILY-HISTORY CLASSES HELP RESEARCHERS DISCOVER PAST
Have you ever wondered where your ancestors came from? Are you curious about their military service or daily lives? Begin your family-history research at Fort Bend County Libraries' Local History and Genealogy Department at George Memorial Library,1001 Golfview in Richmond. Library staff will present two programs in January to help the beginning family-history researcher pursue their genealogy search.
The class "Family History Research: U.S. Military Records," will take place on Tuesday, January 15, beginning at 10:00 am in the library's Computer Lab. Staff from the Genealogy and Local History Department will show family researchers how to trace family history using military records such as draft-registration cards, Civil War service records, and pension-application files. Staff will also introduce the library's microfilm collection of indexes to the Revolutionary War, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and World War I. Online resources, such as the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System website and the American Civil War Homepage, will also be discussed.
The class "Using Historic Newspapers for Genealogy" will take place on Tuesday, January 22, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab. Learn how to find and search archived editions of historic newspapers to discover details about the daily lives of people in the past.
